Carter County finances under sheriff’s office, solid waste among ‘deficiencies’
A Tennessee Comptroller’s report on Carter County’s recent 2022 audit named former Sheriff Dexter Lunceford in one of several areas of deficiency.
The report said Lunceford did not obtain a letter of agreement or court degree to authorize the hiring of deputies.
The audit also stated the Director of Schools offices and specifically the school transportation department were under investigation as well as the county’s solid waste operations.
Current Carter County Director of Schools Brandon Carpenter confirmed he is not the subject of the investigation. Carpenter replaced Tracey McAbee as director in June of 2022. McAbee stepped down to accept a similar position in Middle Tennessee and served starting in 2020.
