New bill in TN would increase penalties for threats to schools

There’s a new call to action when it comes to threats to Tennessee schools. Lawmakers and school leaders are issuing a warning saying these threats are no joke and will lead to serious consequences. A new bill being introduced in the TN state house would make a threat of mass violence on a school or government building a Class D felony. That’s up to 12 years in prison, and a possible fine of $5,000. Tennessee schools are also enforcing a zero-tolerance offense for any student who makes a mass threat, resulting in a one-year suspension. Several schools in the Tri Cities region have recently been subjected to anonymous threats.
