Capital murder suspects out of Mississippi arrested in Smyth County

The daughter of the couple captured in Sugar Grove, Virginia on Thursday is also charged in the murder of Kirby Carpenter.
A story published by NBC affiliate WTVA in Tupelo says Caitlin Spence was taken into custody on Nov. 30 by the Tippah County Sheriff’s Office.
The report said investigators had long suspected the three family members had a role in the death of Carpenter. Police identified Caitlin Spence as Carpenter’s girlfriend when the murder took place.
Jeffery and Karen Spence were also arrested on Thursday by officers with the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Two suspects in the murder of a Mississippi father of two have been taken into custody in Smyth County, Virginia.
The Sheriff’s Office report said Jeffery and Karen Spence were located in the Sugar Grove community near Mount Rogers.
The couple was charged with capital murder in the 2022 case involving Tupelo businessman Kirby Carpenter. He was found dead from a gunshot wound near his home. The suspects are being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.
