Sheriff’s Office: Virginia cyber crook swindles elderly resident out of $130,000
Sheriff Jeff Cassidy said a Glen Allen, Virginia man took advantage of a Sullivan County woman with the ‘fix your computer’ scheme, causing the victim to withdraw more than $137,000 from her account.
The suspected cybercrime thief, Hang Zhan, 29, convinced the victim to buy thousands in gift cards last month when they told her she used illegal activity while online shopping.
The next day, Zhan allegedly told the victim that her bank account was compromised online and she needed to withdraw her remaining funds and they would come to her home and then transfer the $130,000 into a new account. Police said Zhan picked up the cash and fled but he was taken into custody 12 days later by the Virginia State Police after she confirmed his identity.
He remains in Prince William County awaiting extradition and is charged with theft over $60,000, fraud, and financially exploiting an elderly resident.
