Coal miner killed in Buchanan County mine accident
A 27-year-old coal miner was killed after being struck by falling rocks while working, according to the Virginia Department of Energy. The accident happened at Buchanan Mine 1 at 4:20 p.m. Friday. Virginia Coal Mine Safety Investigators said in a release Saturday, that the coal miner died after being struck by loose rock that fell from the mine roof. The victim was an evening shift roof bolter. The evening crew had just arrived when the roof fall took place. That section remains closed while the investigation continues. The incident remains under investigation, according to Virginia Energy.
