“Zena’s Place” coming to Breaks Interstate Park
A swimming pool at Breaks Interstate Park has opened alongside a concession stand honoring a fallen high school student. 17 year old Zena Newsome, who worked at the park, was the very first person to use the new pool. She was killed in a crash in May. She was a rising senior at East Ridge High School. A $300,000 grant helped make the construction possible with a ribbon-cutting event held Tuesday. The waterpark concession stand will be dedicated in Newsome’s memory at a later date as “Zena’s Place”. Virginia Energy will place a plaque in the concession stand recognizing her public service to the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization program.
