Johnson County Schools lose $3 million in intricate scam
Johnson County Schools was the victim to a scam that cost the school district almost $3 million. The school system works closely with Pearson Connections Academy, an online school. Its not unusual for the district to send monthly payments to Pearson, but this time they were caught in a scam. The sender posing as Pearson asked for a wire transfer, which school leaders felt was unusual, but extensive paperwork for the transfer was in order. The school system found out after it was notified of fraudulent activity by the bank. Law enforcement and cyber security was contacted to conduct an investigation. New cyber security procedures have also been put into place for school system employees.
