Carter County Sheriff’s Office warns of scam involving agency
The Carter County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a new phone scam where people pretend to be law enforcement. The scammers are impersonating officers and calling residents, telling them they have missed jury duty and must pay a fine or they will be arrested. The Sheriff’s Office says the scammers are giving the name of an actual officer with the sheriff’s office and are using technology to spoof the number that shows up on Caller ID. Sheriff’s office officials say if you receive a scam call like this, do not give out any personal information. The sheriff’s office also reminds residents that they will never call and demand money about a warrant for an arrest.
