Appalachia Service Project breaks ground on new training center
Appalachia Service Project broke ground on Thursday for its new Appalachian Highlands Volunteer and Training Center. The new center is an expansion for ASP and will allow it to have more volunteers working on more projects across the region. The facility will train volunteers and also serve as a hub for any natural disasters that might occur in the future. The new facility will have dorms, a full kitchen, a gathering space and serve as a resource for the community. Johnson City Commissioner Aaron Murphy said having this facility in the area is will make a key difference in the event of mass tragedy. Construction of the Appalachian Highlands Volunteer and Training Center will begin immediately and is set to be complete by the fall of 2025.
