Bristol, Virginia City Council approves comprehensive agreement for providing funding to build new elementary school

The Bristol, Virginia City Council has voted 3-2 to approve moving forward with a comprehensive agreement to provide state mandated PPEA funds to consolidate three city elementary schools and move all elementary students to one site.

The agreement, with four amendments made by City Manager Randall Eads, gets the ball rolling on a proposed plan that would see the building of a new intermediate school at the Van Pelt site that would house 2nd-5th graders while the existing school would serve Pre-K through 1st grade students at an approximated cost of $18.4 million.

This was the same proposed agreement between the Bristol, Virginia School Board and JA Street that was rejected by council last November.

Prior to the agreement being approved, a motion was made by council member Kevin Mumpower for a referendum vote that would allow citizens to decide at the polls on the proposed agreement, however, it was ultimately rejected 3-2.
