UPDATE: Virginia Supreme Court throws out injunction that stopped removal of Confederate markers in Richmond
Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney’s directive to have Confederate monuments removed from downtown can continue after the Virginia Supreme Court dismissed an injunction filed by an anonymous plaintiff.
The court said in the decision that a Circuit Court judge abused his discretion in granting the 60-day stay. A provision in a new state law that went into effect last month says only a city attorney can legally challenge the removal of those statues.
Stoney vowed earlier this year to clear the streets of the Confederacy capital of the Civil War landmarks.
