VDOT Named As A Top Finalist For I-81 Corridor Safety Project
The Virginia Department of Transportation efforts to improve the I-81 corridor through southwest Virginia has resulted in the agency being named a top national finalist in the annual America’s Transportation Awards competition. The I-81 improvement project is designed to address travel time delay and safety concerns along the corridor. A 2018 study found that more than eleven million trucks transport 312 billion dollars in goods along the corridor each year. There were also more than 2 thousand vehicle crashes annually, with 26 percent of those involving heavy trucks. The VDOT I-81 Corridor Operations Expansion Program will now be considered for top national awards to be handed out later this year.
