UPDATE: VHSL council approves sports schedules for remainder of 2020-2021

After 9 months of quiet gyms and fields due to the pandemic, the Virginia High School League’s executive council has given the green light for athletic competition seasons to begin.

Winter sports will begin in December including basketball with practices on Dec. 7 and the regular season on Dec. 21, according to league information.

Fall sports have been moved to February with regular-season matchups in football for all schools beginning Feb. 22 and state title games will be held in May.

Spring sports like baseball and girls softball will maintain their annual slate which runs April through June.

The last VHSL-sanctioned event to take place was the league’s post-season basketball tournaments. Gate City High School’s girls’ basketball was one of the fortunate programs to capture a title before the pandemic caused the remainder of the tournaments in March to be canceled along with all spring sports.
