Depot Square Historic District in Abingdon added to Virginia’s Landmark Register
Depot Square Historic District in Abingdon is one of fifteen new locations added to Virginia’s Landmark Register.
The nominated places were approved during the Virginia Landmarks Register listings quarterly meeting earlier this month. Depot Square Historic District is located around one block south of West Main St, which took shape beginning in 1856 when the Virginia and Tennessee railroad extended the first set of tracks through Abingdon and constructed a depot.
The district currently consists of seven historical buildings and a pedestrian bridge first erected in 1922. Among some of the buildings includes the three-story Hattie House Hotel, now known as the Mercantile Building, which was constructed in the middle 1800s.
The historic district helps to recall Abingdon’s railroad history, which propelled it to a regional center of commerce and trade once tracks were built through the town.
