The suspect in a Tuesday morning shooting in Lebanon, Virginia notified emergency dispatchers of the crime shortly afterward when she called 911.
According to a report from Commonwealth’s Attorney Zach Stoots issued Tuesday afternoon, Brenda Jane Hicks made the call after she fired several shots into a pickup truck driven by William Bailey while in the parking lot of the Russell County Shopping Center on East Main Street.
The two were estranged and encountered each other on the lot property near Dollar General just before 10 a.m. when Hicks went back to her vehicle and retrieved a gun, Stoots wrote.
Bailey was operating a pickup truck when he was struck by the gunfire, causing him to drive into several parked vehicles. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Hicks, 63, of Lebanon, is charged with one count of first-degree murder and a weapon charge, according to the attorney. She is being held at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail.
