Federal wildlife service proposing to list native SWVA fish as “threatened”, public comment wanted
The US Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking public comment on a proposal to list a fish as threatened that is native to Southwest VA waters.
Federal wildlife officials say the sickle darter currently exists in only six known populations, include in river systems just outside of Northeast TN, while being present in the upper Clinch River, and North and Middle Forks of the Holston River. A report from the service says the species is threatened by loss of habitat and diminished water quality.
With the proposed listing and conservation work, the hope is to stabilize the fish’s population.
Public comments on the proposal are being accepted through Jan. 11 and can be made by clicking here.
