Virus cases at Virginia’s prison facilities hit the highest mark of the pandemic so far

Statewide COVID numbers among prisoners and staff at Virginia’s correctional centers are the highest they’ve been since the start of the pandemic.
Data compiled by the Department of Corrections show more than 1,300 active cases along with 38 inmate deaths and 1 prison worker death within the last 7 days.
In far Southwest Virginia DOC facilities, the most cases have been recorded at Pocahontas State Correctional Center in Tazewell County with 198 inmates being treated recently.
Elsewhere, the state prison in Bland has 176 inmates with the virus and the Appalachian Men’s Detention Center in Honaker has 33 cases. Pocahontas also has the highest staff member count with 22 suffering from the virus.
