Breaks Interstate Park reports weekend rescue of kayak rider
Several agencies from Virginia and Kentucky were dispatched to Breaks Interstate Park over the weekend in the search for a missing kayaker.
Park rangers got word from a group of boaters that one of their friends had gotten separated during their river excursion. Crews from Haysi, Dickenson County, and Elkhorn City launched recovery teams as weather conditions worsened during the evening with temperatures in the teens.
The 23-year-old man was found in the early morning hours and the park reported that the boater was treated for a broken finger and mild hypothermia.
A park official wrote that they published the information to let visitors know that the Breaks can be as unforgiving as it is beautiful and to have everyone pack an emergency kit to use inside the park if conditions warrant.
