Northam Announces Nearly 30 Million Dollars In Broadband Internet In Southwest Virginia
Virginian’s living and working in eleven localities, including parts of southwest Virginia will soon have access to high speed internet. The announcement comes from Governor Ralph Northam’s office in the form of nearly thirty million dollars in grants for the Virginia Telecommunications Initiative. Specifically in southwest Virginia is the partnership between the Cumberland Plateau Planning District and Point Broadband for just over 16 million dollars in more than 13 hundred miles of fiberoptics. Meanwhile, the LENOWISCO Planning District in partnership with Scott County Telephone will use the grant funds to construct 73 miles of fiberoptics at gigabit speeds. The funding will support five projects, connecting more than eleven thousand households in southwest Virginia.
