Northam reflects as Virginia passes first anniversary of COVID cases in the state

The state of Virginia has reached a somber milestone.

This weekend marked the one-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 case being identified in Virginia, and this weekend will mark one year since the Commonwealth’s first virus related death.

Governor Ralph Northam says more than 9,000 Virginians have died from the sickness, but that’s is not all that has been left in the pandemic’s wake.

He said he sympathized with residents who have lost jobs, income, and security due to the pandemic but Northam is encouraged by vaccination efforts and is planning larger-scale events to get the serum to people with FEMA in the coming weeks.

The governor says the state is still standing firm on crowd caps at 250 people for high school sporting events but if COVID cases continue to decline, adjustments could be made in April.

Northam also reported that Virginia is currently 11th in the US in resident vaccinations with more than 50,000 per day getting the shot.
