TBI: One person shot, investigation underway into officer-involved shooting in Kingsport
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Kingsport that happened late Sunday night.
State authorities say a Hawkins County deputy and Mount Carmel Police officer spotted a stolen SUV with five people inside traveling along Highway 11W around 9:30 p.m. A pursuit ensued into Kingsport after the driver allegedly refused to pull over. The driver came to the intersection of Virgil and Tiptop Avenue where the roadway was blocked by Kingsport Police and a Sullivan County Sheriff deputy on an unrelated incident.
The suspect is accused of not stopping in that area and driving towards officers, resulting in the deputy firing shots and striking the driver. The driver and one passenger were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries, and no officers were injured in the incident, which remains under investigation.
