Tennessee House joins Senate in passing bill to allow an opt out option to curriculum related to sexual orientation and gender identity

Legislation that requires Tennessee school districts to notify parents of curriculum on sexual orientation or gender identity and allow them to opt-out of that instruction is heading to Gov. Lee to be signed into law.

Lawmakers in the House chamber passed the measure Wednesday in a 64-29 vote, joining their Senate colleagues who also passed the bill last week. The measure would give school systems 30 days to inform families about the upcoming material and would allow an opt-out option that wouldn’t penalize students.

Supporters of the bill say families rights need to be strengthened what their children learn in school, while opponents say this singles out marginalized students, according to the Associated Press.
