VSP releases additional details regarding officer-involved shooting Thursday in Washington County, VA

Virginia State Police are investigating after one person was shot and killed by a Washington County, Virginia deputy at a hotel Thursday morning.

Preliminary details from state authorities say the Washington County, VA Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a suspected protective order violation at the Economy Inn off Lee Highway around 11 a.m.

They found a male suspect in a room, who gave police permission to search the room and his truck. Deputies found a weapon and drugs during that search, and as they were placing the man into custody, state police say the man reached under a mattress and pulled out a gun, but was shot by a deputy.

The man died at the scene, and his identity has not been released.
