Virginia Department of Health warns residents of natural water contamination due to Tropical Storm Elsa
The Virginia Department of Health urges caution in advance of severe weather. Tropical Storm Elsa is expected to cause heavy rain in parts of Virginia this week. Once the sun comes back out, residents should be aware of the potential health risks that water recreation may carry. Heavy rains can increase the risk of animal waste and the potential release of inadequately treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants. Bacteria, debris, and other potentially harmful materials in rivers or bodies of water can pose risks to people and animals. VDH recommends the public avoid getting natural water in their mouths and to refrain from swimming if you have broken skin from wounds.
