Lee Statue Coming Down Wednesday
Protective fencing goes up Tuesday evening in Richmond, Virginia surrounding a towering statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee that is set for removal from Monument Avenue on Wednesday. The 21 foot tall statue of Lee on a horse is being taken down, after Governor Ralph Northam announced plans to do so in 2020 just ten days after the death of George Floyd. Lawsuits slowed the progress of the removal plans, but a recent ruling by the Supreme Court of Virginia cleared the way for Wednesday historic removal which was built as a tribute to a Civil War hero who is now widely seen as a symbol of racial injustice according to the Virginia Associated Press report.
