Tennessee Valley Authority launches nuclear energy program
The Tennessee Valley Authority board approved on Thursday the launch of a new program to develop and fund small nuclear reactors as a means to power the company’s electric grid. TVA President and CEO Jeff Lyash says, “Our objective is to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and to do it at a price and level of reliability that people can count on; and this is part of doing that.”
The TVA hopes nuclear power, as well as hydroelectric and solar power, will eventually take the place of fossil fuels in regard to generating electricity. A decision on the reactors’ location has not yet been determined, however officials are considering Oak Ridge, TN at the Clinch River Nuclear Site. Read more on TVA’s official website.
