Police deploy spike strips to stop suspected truck thief on Interstate 81

A serious chain of events spread over two counties began with the pursuit of a driver in a stolen truck on Interstate 81.

Washington County, Virginia Sheriff Blake Andis said Jessee William McGhee, 20, of Chilhowie reportedly took the pickup from a residence in Meadowview Thursday night and was later stopped with spike strips in Glade Spring after the chase with Smyth County officers.

Police said McGhee ran from the truck then forced his way into a home on Camkell Lane where he pulled a knife on the owner. He was arrested when officers swarmed the house.

McGhee is in jail without bond and faces a list of charges including breaking and entering, grand larceny, reckless driving, and eluding police.
