Calendar turns to 95th anniversary of Rye Cove’s deadly tornado of 1929
This month marks the 95th anniversary of one of the worst weather-related school disasters in U.S. history.
Twelve students and one teacher were killed in 1929 when an EF-2 tornado swept through the Rye Cove community in Scott County, Virginia injuring dozens of residents.
Survivors were placed on rail cars and taken to Clinchport where awaiting ambulances delivered patients to Bristol and Kingsport hospitals. Students and administrators made their way out of a nearby pond where they were deposited by the violent winds. Schools were closed until the following year.
