Kingsport police end standoff in Colonial Heights with arrest

The Kingsport Police Department responded to a “barricaded subject” near the Colonial Heights area Sunday night, causing a shelter in place to be issued. The stand-off happened in the 100 block of Meadow Glade Lane in Colonial Heights. 34 year old Matthew Purkey of Kingsport had been awake for multiple days after reportedly consuming methamphetamine, fired a gun in the home, and started a fire. A woman and three juveniles to fled to a nearby church and called police. Negotiations were made and Purkey exited the home. He was taken to Kingsport City Jail, where he was charged with aggravated arson and felony possession of a firearm. There were no reported injuries.
