UPDATE: VSP reports tractor trailer driver in Chilhowie crash dies from injuries

Officials with the Virginia State Police confirm that the driver of a tractor trailer has died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash Wednesday night in Smyth County.

A preliminary investigation determined the rig ran off the road at the intersection of Whitetop Road and Ramplewood Road near Chilhowie and then overturned down an embankment. Emergency officials said it took nearly two hours to remove the victim from the cab of the truck. He then was transported via medical helicopter to an area hospital. The crash is still under investigation.
