Virginia Lawmaker Wants To End Lee-Jackson Holiday
Next month lawmakers in Virginia will entertain hundreds of bills when the 2020 legislative session gets underway, and the Associated Press says one of those bills is a measure that would eliminate the Commonwealth’s Lee-Jackson Day celebration. The Holiday was merged with one celebrating the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. But in 2000 the legislature ended the Lee-Jackson- King day when it created a separate Holiday for King. Critics of the Holiday say its a celebration of the state’s slave holding history and is offensive to some African Americans and many cities have opted not to observe the celebration. A similar bill was introduced last year but died in a subcommittee on a party line vote.
