Funeral services scheduled for this evening for former Carter County Mayor Rusty Barnett

Funeral arrangements have been made for former Carter County Mayor Rusty Barnett following his passing on Monday.

According to an obituary, family will receive friends starting this evening at 6 p.m until 8:30 p.m at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, with funeral services immediately following. A graveside service for Barnett will be conducted tomorrow at 12:00 p.m at Captain Nelson Cemetery.

Barnett died Monday morning after suffering a heart attack last week. He served in several public roles throughout his life including Mayor since 2018, in addition to his nearly 40 years of service at the Elizabethton Fire Department, as well as service on the county school board and economic development commission.

He was 65 years old.
