Ballad Health: Three MIS-C cases recently seen in children within system
Ballad Health says they have recently seen a trio of multisystem inflammatory syndrome cases in children.
The topic of MIS-C was discussed at the health system’s weekly media briefing Wednesday. According to Dr. Clay Runnels, Ballad’s Chief Physician Executive, the system is seeing an increase of COVID-19 infections in children, and while most only experience no to mild symptoms, contracting coronavirus can lead to further complications like MIS-C, a condition that causes inflammation in vital organs like the heart and lungs
“Left untreated, MIS-C can cause widespread organ damage. While the exact cause of this condition is unknown, there’s a strong correlation between COVID-19 and MIS-C,” said Runnels.
Runnels recommends parents look for MIS-C symptoms in their children should they have COVID-19 like fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue. Runnels said although the condition is serious, if MIS-C is detected earlier and treated well, the prognosis can turn out very good.
