Poll: Trump support high in SW Virginia but not near 2016 levels
A recent Roanoke College poll shows the support President Donald Trump has now compared with his 2016 tour of the Coalfields has dwindled.
A survey of nearly 600 residents from all regions of the state showed Trump has a 10 percent lead over Democrat and Vice President Joe Biden in Southwest Virginia. At the same time in the last presidential election, Trump led First Lady Hillary Clinton in the region by 39 percent with a whopping 69 percent of the vote.
The stats are telling as Virginia fades as a four-year swing state for the major parties. In 2016, Trump captured 76 percent of the vote in coal-dependent Buchanan County—one of his highest voter totals in the U.S.
Statistics supplied by Fox News show Biden has made just two campaign stops in Virginia. The Commonwealth was not on Trump’s itinerary for 2020.
