Virginia Releases Recommendations For Teacher Diversity
In Virginia, 82 percent of teachers are white. That’s one reason State Education leaders are calling for greater diversity as well as decreases in disproportionate rates of Black student suspensions in the Virginia Department of Education’s latest attempt to fix the diversity problem. During an educational symposium John B. King, who served as Secretary of Education under President Barack Obama, says having an African American teacher in elementary school increases the likelihood of students’ graduating from high school and going to college. Governor Ralph Northam and first lady Pam Northam were also scheduled to address the gathering.
