Bristol, VA leaders approve work order for gas and dewatering system improvements to landfill following several complaints of strong odor
City of Bristol, VA leaders have approved a plan to try and fix a smelly situation at a nearby landfill.
In a 4-1 vote last night, council members moved forward with a landfill gas and dewatering system improvements work order. The order will cost $90,000 plus material costs to work on correcting an odor issue at the Shakesville Rd. landfill, the subject of a number of complaints from residents over the last few months that has stretched into Tennessee and even towards Exit 7.
City Manager Randy Eads says a preliminary air quality test did not return results that suggests there are health risks from the odor, but did recommend to leaders that its an issue that needs correcting.
Engineering consultants at the meeting say excessive rainfall in the last few years is contributing to the issue and also stated the source of the smell is more than likely coming from the landfill, but will investigate other potential sources.
Work on the landfill improvements are expected to begin in the coming days.
Documents below discussed at the city council meeting Tuesday outline costs and details of the work order:
