A high-ranking officer of the Tennessee National Guard with ties to Hawkins County is retiring this weekend after 30 years of service.
Brig. Gen. Kurtis Winstead, who was raised in Rogersville but now resides in Franklin, began his career in 1990 prior to Operation Desert Storm in Iraq and later returned to the Middle East as a Command Judge Advocate in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004.
Winstead was promoted to General and Director of the Joint Staff in 2017 and he is also an attorney with his own practice. A ceremony to honor Winstead is scheduled for Saturday in Nashville.
