Betting sportsbooks in Virginia and Tennessee are getting their first real test with the opening of direct competition in neighboring Cherokee, North Carolina.
Harrah’s Casino and Resort cut the ribbon on The Book—one of the Tar Heel State’s first legal sports betting ventures that offers a lounge with high definition screens, manned and self-serve pay windows, and other amenities to try and lure gamblers over the state line where online apps have collected millions since state legislatures legalized those enterprises.

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, co-partners with Caesar’s in the operation of the North Carolina property, had proposed a casino project last year with Pinnacle retail developer Steve Johnson that would have been located on Virginia property. Bristol is now in development with Hard Rock International and private investors on a casino resort on Gate City Highway.
