Transgender athletic ban in Tennessee goes to governor for signature
The bill that would ban transgender students from competing in middle and high school sports in Tennessee now awaits the signature of Governor Bill Lee.
Senate Bill 228 has already been endorsed by Lee who said transgender girls will destroy women’s sports if they are allowed to compete. His opponents have called Lee transphobic and the legislation a bill of hatred against a segment of people.
Nashville Democrat Rep. John Ray Clemmons said other bills of more significance should have earned the interest of the legislature.
“Proactively discriminating against and trying to solve a problem that does not exist and has not yet arisen looks poorly upon this body,” said Clemmons during Monday’s session.
