Spike strips eventually stop police pursuit in Washington, Smyth counties on Interstate 81
The Virginia State Police has released details surrounding a police pursuit Wednesday night on Interstate 81.
The chase began after a trooper attempted to make a traffic stop for a speeding motorist in the Glade Spring area. The driver continued northbound on 81 and then accelerated to try and avoid the officer.
A deputy with the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office assisted the state trooper by placing spike strips on the roadway. Despite three of the car’s tires blown out by the devices, the driver continued to travel on the interstate until crashing into a guardrail outside of Marion.
The unidentified 30-year-old female driver from Greer, South Carolina was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. The pursuit and crash remain under investigation.
