UPDATE: Lawmakers reject Northam recommendation to redirect coal tax credit dollars to programs at UVA-Wise

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s proposal to redirect dollars to programs at UVA-Wise from savings to ending coal tax credits has been rejected by lawmakers.

House delegates approved a motion to pass by Northam’s proposal during a one day session Wednesday, while Senators voted 26-14 against the governor’s recommendation. If the amendment would’ve been passed, UVA-Wise would’ve been the recipient of funding in a number of course offerings that previously went towards coal tax credits, including receiving $6.5M per year after fiscal year 2026.

The bill, in it’s form right now, will end issuing three different coal tax credits beginning next year, following a report that the credits generate economic losses for Virginia.
