Pocahontas Exhibition Mine receives new round of federal funding for improvements
A historic coal mine in Southwest Virginia transformed into a tourist attraction has received its second federal grant in four years to help with further development.
More than $379,000 will be earmarked for the second phase of improvements at the Pocahontas Exhibition Mine in Tazewell County including remodeling neighboring property into restaurant space and a new tram stop.
The mine has become an asset in the county’s tourism economy and town officials predict a 50 percent increase in ticket sales with the new additions at the site.
