State employees in Virginia to get 5 percent salary increase in July
Two years ago, teachers from across Virginia marched at the capital demanding better pay from state lawmakers. Beginning next month, teachers’ checks will see more dollars.
A 5 percent pay raise for state workers including public school and state university instructors approved by the General Assembly takes effect in July along with employees in constitutional offices including sheriff’s deputies.
Governor Ralph Northam said he plans to push for another salary increase in a state budget proposal in December.
Recent data from the Virginia Education Association said the teacher salaries in the commonwealth ranked 34th in the US—nearly $10,000 below the national average.
