Virginia health officials record second child death from COVID
Virginia health department officials announced the second death of a child as a result of the COVID virus.
The case was based in the Rappahannock Health District. The first recorded child-age fatality was announced in March. The department reported the child had undergone treatment in Central Virginia. Both victims were below the age of 9.
A report from the American Academy of Pediatrics says COVID is still rare among children but since the pandemic, more than 4 million juveniles have been diagnosed with the virus.
The timing for the second death comes as children are just weeks away from returning to public schools for the fall semester. Health Commissioner Norman Oliver is urging all parents of children 12 and older to have their student vaccinated.
