Tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 81 results in three fatalities

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened on Interstate 81 in Wythe County Friday afternoon. The crash happened in the Southbound lanes of I-81 at mile marker 64. An initial report from VSP says traffic ahead had slowed when a passenger van collided with a tractor-trailer, overturning the van.

A total of seven people were in the van, and of those seven, there are three confirmed fatalities. The remaining four were transported to a nearby hospital via medflight for treatment. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. This crash remains under investigation.
