City of Kingsport’s former Mayor Gardner Hammond passes away at age 87

The City of Kingsport announced the passing of former Mayor K. Gardner Hammond. City officials say Hammond passed away last week at the age of 87, and that they send condolences to his family and friends.

Hammond was first an alderman, then vice mayor, and eventually elected mayor of Kingsport in 1979. Current Mayor, Pat Shull, says, “I periodically called on him, and all past mayors, for guidance. They always stepped up to serve in the ‘Kingsport spirit’. ” Read the obituary here.
