Johnson City police launch effort to make Interstate 26 safer
A heightened police presence on Interstate 26 will become common this year as part of the Johnson City Police Department’s initiative to make those highways safer called ‘Making 26 Safer in 24.’.
Chief Bill Church said several local and state agencies are part of the effort that promises more pro-active stops by officers along with safety statements on message boards to educate drivers.
Since 2022, city officers and state troopers have worked in 779 crash zones, and 8 people have died on I-26. The THP cited following too close, speeding, and distracted driving as the top three causes of interstate wrecks in Johnson City.
