Police: Missing Carter County escapee found in South Carolina with missing man’s items
A Carter County jail escapee that authorities said has a connection to a missing man case has been taken into custody in South Carolina.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office was tipped off about the location of Billy Fletcher who was taken into custody Thursday evening. Sheriff Mike Fraley said Fletcher likely came into contact with 61-year-old Victor Birchfield on the day he walked off from a work detail. In a published report, Birchfield’s daughter Tiffany Cole said Fletcher had been seen in Birchfield’s car and the missing man’s credit card had been used in Asheville and Clemson.
South Carolina law enforcement also told Cole that Fletcher had been wearing some of Birchfield’s clothing. Fletcher’s previous charges include kidnapping, armed burglary, and assault. Fraley said that some of those charges were dropped in court and Fletcher was convicted of attempted robbery and probation violations.
