Abingdon Police: Man arrested, accused of pulling knife on officers during fight
A Meadowview, Virginia man is in jail after police say he fought officers while under the influence Tuesday night at an Abingdon Shoney’s.
The Abingdon Police Department was called to the Cummings Street location last night around 6:15 p.m, and located a man, later identified as Jesse James Barrett, 25, on a bathroom stall floor. Police spoke with the man after exiting the bathroom, and noticed he was intoxicated.
Police attempted to place the man under arrest for being intoxicated in public, when he allegedly resisted and lunged towards them. Officers say he fought with them and pulled a knife out but then dropped it before police placed him into custody.
A search of Barrett found a white crystal substance and needle on his person, and as they were removing Barrett from the restaurant, authorities say he continued to resist, cursed the patrons, and made threats.
He faces several charges including the following: assault on a police officer, intoxicated in public, possession of controlled substance schedule I and II, obstructing justice, and possession of paraphernalia.
Barrett is being held without bond in the Southwest VA Regional Jail.
