Wise County Sheriff’s Office asks residents to be aware of fake COVID-19 contact tracing scam

The Wise County, VA Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be aware of a fake COVID-19 contact tracing scam.

A Facebook post from the law enforcement agency says the fake contact tracers claim they are calling from the health department and that person has been in contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus.

The fake tracers then are reportedly requesting credit card information to receive a home test kit in the mail and are told to self-isolate. The Sheriff’s Office says the Wise County Health Department will never ask for credit card information or require any payment for COVID-19 testing, and also asks those who receive such a call to hang up.
